In the last week, I had the honor of sitting with Angie Scarlett, Jay, and Marleny, the women behind the new DJ platform FEMME RADIO. We spoke about the DJ industry, how Femme Radio came about, and their expectancies for FEMME RADIO's future. I am so happy that we can share these three remarkable women's stories and the heights that they are taking their skills. 2020 has been challenging for everyone, and for these women, they decided to move forward and build a platform to share their love for music. According to Angie Scarlett, "I want to inspire people to expand their knowledge in music and put people on to good music."
They're premiering their first mixes as a collective today, and must i say it is a good time. I will let you decide where you want to start; however, we advise to set the mood for each. Jay's mix is all about the Nostalgic blends; it's all about the beats, as she loves the Jazz culture; she's bringing you back to the sweet sounds of old school music, makes you want to slow dance around your room, and just vibing, WARNING! It may have you texting your ex or crush; don't say I didn't warn you. Marleny, also known as DJ Monsta Mars, drops with some Monsta tings, a mix of sweet love vibes of the 90s- early 00s era; for this, for this mix i suggest you grab a bottle of wine, run a bubble bath, and finally send the risky text you have saved in your notes. Angie Scarlett is a whole experience; with her signature sound, the Brazilian baile funk, she's bringing you an Ibiza festival, carnival, dance party vibes. Don't wake your neighbors; you may want to blast this on the highest volume and dance your worries away. I know you will enjoy all three mixes as much as I did.
Tell us about yourselves, and what got you, ladies, into DJ'n?
Marleny: Dj Monsta mars, i have been a DJ for five years now. I've always had a passion for music, never knew I wanted to become a Dj. When i was younger, i would still download music from Limewire and make Cd's; fast forward to high school, i would always download music to my iPod, and that's what would play at all my friend's parties. My friends would still use my laptop to download music on their phones and iPods. I guess you would say I've always been a DJ'n, just never an official DJ until I got older, and I realize that I can turn my passion into a profit. Now I'm here in LA, I've been here for two years, and my career has grown so much here. Now i am here with these two amazing females starting our brand and trying to take over LA and develop our new brand FEMME RADIO.
Angie: Angie Scarlett, i am from NY, i moved to LA for two years, i started DJing over a year now. I went to school to perfect my craft, I learned the basics, and then I got with Marleny and her boyfriend Rudy, who is also a DJ. I wanted to gain more knowledge of the DJ industry from them since they were already established in the DJ world, playing at clubs and parties, which is something I wanted to do. As a child growing up, there was a lot of music in my household, so music has always been a thing for me; that's how i grew my love for music. I was not aware that you could make a career out of this until I met Jay and Marleny. I didn't see many female DJ's growing up, but once I started attending music events, I was able to understand that this could be a path for me. So here i am now DJ'n and building my company with my friends.
Jay: I'm Jay; unlike the other two, i wouldn't consider myself a DJ; it's something entirely new for me; my move to California has been a road to discovery. I am still learning myself and my passions. Music has always been an escape and my go-to. Within the past month, I had to learn the ins and outs since this is brand new to me. Overall, moving to LA, going to events, and experiencing new things, new music, new cultures, and seeing the music culture has been a stepping stone for me learning myself and understanding what I want to do. It's been fun learning new things and failing. All of these experiences helped me grow.
What prompt the idea of Femme Radio?
Jay: Back in January, Angie brought up the idea that she would like to start a radio station. During Covid, we placed in on the backburner for a little while because it was a very overwhelming time for everyone. I would say early summer, we hopped back on the idea and took it more seriously, and we discussed it more. Marleny then came up with the name, and we started putting things together and planning accordingly on how we can make this work. We all have very different sounds and styles, and I believe that's why Angie knew it would work great for us to do this together.
Angie: To piggyback on what Jay said, I was having a lot of trouble finding good music in LA. We all used to say that when we went out to clubs and parties the music wasn't right when we would go to clubs and parties, and we heard the same songs over and over. I saw how hard it was for Marleny and her boyfriend Rudy to get booked at clubs here in LA and how hard it was for someone to believe in them, and say " hey, yes, i would like for you to DJ at my club." It's such one image and one song in LA, so i wanted to start FEMME RADIO to have different sounds, genres, and vibes that people can share, not just mainstream music and what you hear every day.
Marleny: When Angie brought the idea to me, i was 100% down to do it, especially when she mentioned that it would be an all-female group, i am always down for that. Because as she said, it's hard for females to grow in this industry, especially from the east coast; it's a different vibe. And we had to get used to that, I was down to help her out with it and grow the brand. To build a platform for DJ's like me to have a platform.
In word one, describe your mixes.
Marleny: Throwback.
Angie: An experience.
Jay: Melodic.
What differentiates your skill sets from each other?
Angie: We all like to blend two sounds, I do it a lot with my mixes. I want you to hear one sound, I like to match the beats together. I am into baile funk music, even if I'm doing reggae or dance hall mix. My sound is a heavy bass hitting your eardrums.
Marleny: Jen has chill vibes, Angie baile funk is more hype, and i am an open format, so i pretty much play everything. one thing I always do, and my goal is still to make people dance and make them feel good when they listen to my mix. Even though we have different genres, we all have the same goal: to make people feel good and dance.
Jay: I am new to this, so i don't have a skill set, yet, but i can say my flow and make sure that the sound goes. Both Ang and Marleny have years of experience, and I am still learning how to make it work. Nostalgic blends is my first mix, and I'm focused mainly on the flow and making it sound like one song.
What is the overall vision for FEMME RADIO?
Angie: I want to inspire people to expand their music knowledge, putting people on to new music and selling out clubs and parties.
Jay: The most important thing, bringing a female face to this industry, is a new chapter and something that the industry needs. It's an art form, and women put their all into this shit; it's unique and formidable. And women need a voice in this industry.
Marleny: FEMME RADIO is here to make the female DJ's familiar. We are here to bring people together who love music. And give female DJs the platform to shine.
