FALL MUST HAVE: MOZH MOZH AW'19 COLLECTION

As I began the creation process of the Mozh Mozh AW19 collection, my background of music transported me to 1970’s Jamaica and the powerful women who broke barriers singing reggae. And got me thinking about powerful women. It was not without irony that I ended up at my sister’s wedding in Texas, and discovered that a good pair of boots and a wide rimmed cowboy hat can make a woman feel stronger that she knew she could

NYFW: LIU YONG X RISHIKENSH

Famed Chinese designer Liu Yong collaborated with Rishikensh on their Spring/Summer 2020 capsule, presenting an unapologetic streetwear collection that gave new meaning to the athleisure category.

The collection was bold in color, tie-dye centric, yet very monochromatic. Redefining street style, the collection unfolded with neon blue, orange, and green jumpsuits, tank tops and t-shirts, layered with perforated-mesh overcoats and hoodies. Clear raincoats with neon piping accessorized several looks, allowing for the colorful silhouettes to breakthrough on the runway.

DESIGNER TO KNOW : BILLIE ESSCO

Growing up, Billie Essco would mill his eyes over his home in the East Side of Buffalo, New York. The closest building to a skyscraper is downtown.  But on his block, there weren’t any high rises or tall structures. It didn’t deflate him one bit. Instead, he used it as inspiration. “We didn’t see how far we could go up,” Essco said.

“Downtown didn’t inspire us. There’s always a culture downtown in cities like Los Angeles and New York. In Buffalo, it’s all in the smaller buildings.”

ARTIST TO KNOW : YUNA

Yuna wants her latest work to showcase the new her. But to pull that off, she had to focus her attention on a record that would, essentially, never end. She found that in Rouge. During the album’s year-long creative process, the Malaysian singer reached out for guest verses from some of the biggest rappers in the game (Tyler, The Creator, G-Eazy), went in a funkier direction than her previous projects and appropriately titled the last song on the record “Tiada Akhir,” which means “no ending” in her native Malay.

“I’m just happy that, in this album, people get to see that grown-up Yuna,” she says. “The woman that I am today was built from all the records that I’ve put out before. This is the new me.”

Rouge, which dropped July 12, is a continuation of the 32-year-old singer’s musical resume and an introduction to Yuna’s new funk-driven soul sound. It’s a far cry from the folk-pop fans are used to, but represents a new, star-studded beginning for a singer looking to soon take over the R&B world.

DESIGNERS TO KNOW: EMBER NICHE EYEWEAR

While in college, Ember Niches founders would resell rare streetwear and ready-made eye-wear to make ends meet. In doing so, they developed passions for fashion and eye-wear. Those passions ultimately intersected at Ember Niche. The objective was to create a luxury eye-wear experience, but from a unique street perspective. Inspired by the extreme sartorial novelty of black dandyism, Ember Niche is devoted to establishing a brand that fosters individuality, creativity and fearlessness.

Good things come to those who wait. 24-year-old rapper and producer Knucks has certainly learned this. His patience has moved him past moments where he felt like artists only wanted him for his beats.
